Family dog saved from blaze; Corey Walker calls Decatur fire response ‘amazing’

May 14-- May 14--DECATUR -- Firefighters were able to save a family dog named Bentley from a residential fire in the 2600 block of Glen Briar Place on Monday.

The home belonged to the family of Anthony Corey Walker, president of the Black Chamber of Commerce of Illinois. Walker said he, his wife and two sons were not home at the time.

The fire was detected by a residential alarm system, according to the Decatur Fire Department, and crews arrived on scene shortly before 5 p.m.

Walker said Tuesday that he and his family were safe and thankful for their alarm system, as it helped saved their home.

"The fire inspector said that had (alarm company) Vivint not called them, there wouldn't be a structure still sitting there," he said.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the structure and a fire in the kitchen area, the news release said. The crew forced entry and extinguished the fire. Walker and his family later arrived and told firefighters about Bentley, a Shih Tzu, who was found unharmed and reunited with them.

The fire was listed as controlled by 6:33 p.m. The home suffered "moderate" smoke and fire damage, the department said. The cause of the fire is unknown and remains under investigation.

Walker said he and his family were staying in a hotel Tuesday after being displaced by the fire.

He called the American Red Cross, the firefighters who responded to the fire and the family's neighbors who offered their help and support "amazing" and asked that people continue to pray for his family in the fire's aftermath.

"There's nothing we need financially or physically," Walker said. "We've got good insurance, family, amazing friends and neighbors."
