Fairfield man faces weapons, other charges after Norwalk crash

Oct. 13--NORWALK -- Police say that a Fairfield man was found to be in possession of a stolen gun, assorted weapons and military surplus items after a serious car crash Tuesday.
Todd Abbruzzese, 45, of Garden Square, Fairfield, was charged with carrying a dangerous weapon, carrying a gun without a permit, failure to register a high-capacity magazine, weapons in a motor vehicle, theft of a firearm, reckless driving, misuse of plate, and driving with no insurance.
Police were notified by a passerby to a single-car crash around 3:30 p.m. in which an SUV drove head first into a pole at Wilson Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Drive.
The air bags were deployed and the driver, identified as Abbruzzese, was standing outside the vehicle.
The witness said the car was traveling fast. The impact damaged the utility pole. Paramedics were called to the scene.
Because the SUV was filled with a large amount of clothing and construction equipment, police conducted an inventory of the vehicle.
That inventory search yielded a .22 caliber pistol, a high-capacity gun magazine, a pellet rifle, a bayonet, machete, a Ghurka knife, camping equipment, a gas mask, metal fighting chains, and military surplus items.
Police said the pistol was stolen out of Alabama and the plates did not belong to the vehicle.
Abbruzzese was informed that he was under arrest while at the hospital. He was brought to headquarters several hours later for processing. His bond was set at $75,000 and he was given a court date of Oct. 21.
