Egg prices hit national record rising nearly $1 in one month, with CT eggs much higher than average

Katherine Lutge, The Hour, Norwalk, Conn.Hour

Mar. 12—Egg prices jumped nearly $1 in one month between January and February this year, an increase of 10.4%, according to data collected by U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The department's monthly report shows the national average price of a dozen large, grade A eggs rose by 94 cents between January and February as bird flu continues to disrupt supply.

Every month the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the change in the average price of a dozen eggs from the month prior. Wednesday's report revealed egg prices at a national record of $5.89 a dozen.

CT Insider has been tracking the rising price of eggs in the state since the end of November. Connecticut is experiencing higher prices than the national average, ranging from $8 to $9 per dozen.

At a ShopRite in Stamford, the price of a dozen grade A store-brand large eggs was $9.99 last week. On Wednesday, Norwalk's Stop & Shop brand eggs were $8.79 while the Cheshire Stop & Shop eggs were priced at $7.99 a dozen. A dozen grade A Big Y eggs in Meriden on Wednesday were $8.99.

Egg prices rise nearly $1 in one month in national record, with CT much higher

Highly pathogenic avian influenza, more commonly known as bird flu, first broke out in egg-laying flocks in 2022. Prices initially peaked in January 2023 at $4.82 but fell to $2.04 by August of that year.

Since its outbreak, bird flu has continued impacting egg supply and prices, as infected flocks halt operations. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 166 million poultry have been affected by bird flu since January 2022.

From August 2023, egg prices have climbed incrementally month-to-month. However, the four months between October 2024 and February 2025 the price of a dozen eggs rose steadily by more than $2.50.

In Connecticut, data collected at local grocery stores by CT Insider reporters revealed a $3 increase between December 2024 and February 2025.

This sharp price spike has affected both consumers and businesses, particularly restaurants and bakeries. Some businesses have begun adding a surcharge on egg products, while some grocery stores, such as Trader Joe's, have implemented limits on the number of egg items customers can purchase daily.

The end is not in sight, as the U.S. Agriculture Department predicts record egg prices could rise more than 40% in 2025.

"Shoppers have begun to see shell egg offerings in the dairycase becoming more reliable although retail price levels have yet to adjust and remain off-putting to many," the USDA wrote in the March 7 report.
