Driver charged in wreck on U.S. 64

Courier-Tribune (Asheboro, NC)

April 12-- Apr. 12--ASHEBORO -- A driver, who is in critical condition, has been charged in connection to a wreck involving a tractor-trailer that took place in Asheboro on Thursday.

According to a report from the N.C. Highway Patrol, a 2018 Honda passenger car driven by James Sanders, 45, of Asheboro, was traveling east on U.S. 64.

Another vehicle, driven by Brandi Garner Caudle, 28, of Seagrove, was traveling behind Sanders.

A tractor-trailer, driven by Herman Lee Headley Jr., 60, of Asheboro, was traveling west on U.S. 64.

Sanders reportedly crossed over the double yellow lines, encroached into the path of the tractor-trailer and the two vehicles collided head on, the report stated. After impact, Caudle's vehicle was struck by debris. Sanders' vehicle traveled off the right side of the road and came to an uncontrolled rest, facing west on the westbound shoulder. The tractor-trailer came to a rest facing east on the shoulder.

As a result of injuries sustained in the crash, Sanders was transported by Randolph County EMS to Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro. He was listed in critical condition on Friday, a hospital spokesperson said.

According to the report, the vehicle Sanders was driving was a rental vehicle. It was rented on March 13 by Carlton James Perkins. Perkins was the only driver listed to be able to operate the vehicle.

When contacted by the highway patrol, Perkins stated that he gave Sanders permission to drive the vehicle, and also that he had declined renter's insurance when renting the vehicle.

The vehicle was supposed to be returned to the rental company April 12.

Sanders has been charged with driving left of center and driving while license revoked.
