Deputy making run for insurance commissioner

May 23--The state's assistant insurance commissioner is seeking the top job in the Kansas Insurance Department.

Clark Shultz is a Republican candidate for insurance commissioner.

Shultz, 61, visited Leavenworth on Monday.

He said the Kansas Insurance Department plays a pivotal role in protecting consumers.

"Everybody buys insurance," he said.

He said the department reviews policies from insurance companies to make sure they comply with state and federal law.

"We're there to make sure there is nothing in the fine print that is detrimental to the consumer," he said.

Shultz is a former member of the Kansas House of Representatives and state Senate. He served as chairman of the House's insurance committee.

He has been with the Kansas Insurance Department for 3.5 years.

Shultz said state law requires the insurance commissioner to be well versed in the insurance industry. And Shultz, who is a licensed insurance agent, said he has experience working in the industry.

The office of insurance commissioner is an open position this year because the current commissioner, Ken Selzer, is making a run for governor.

Shultz has not yet officially filed as a candidate for insurance commissioner, but the filing deadline is not until June 1.

Vicki Schmidt, a state senator from Topeka, has filed as a Republican candidate for insurance commissioner.

The primary election is Aug. 7. The general election will be Nov. 6.
