CT woman gets probation for using someone else’s identity to receive $15K in medical services [Hartford Courant]

A Hartford woman has been sentenced to probation for fraudulently receiving medical goods and services through Medicaid using someone else’s identity.

Ebony Mayo, 42, faced sentencing Wednesday in Hartford Superior Court, where she was ordered to serve five years of probation, according to the state Division of Criminal Justice. While on probation, a violation would expose her to as many as three years in prison, the division said.

During the proceeding, Mayo pleaded guilty to felony counts of first-degree larceny by defrauding a public community, health insurance fraud and first-degree identity theft, records show.

Mayo was ordered to pay just under $16,000 in restitution and to not act as a provider in the Medicaid program while she is on probation. She was also ordered during the probationary period not to have contact with the victim of the identity theft, who had no knowledge of the fraudulent activities, according to the DCJ.

Between March and October 2021, Mayo used the Medicaid number and identity of another person to obtain medical treatment and services, an investigation by the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit in the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney found.

According to the Division of Criminal Justice, Mayo admitted that she had her own medical insurance but that she used someone else’s identity and Medicaid card to avoid having to make co-payments.

The investigation revealed that Medicaid fraudulently paid 93 claims for service, totaling a loss of about $15,778.

The case was prosecuted by the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit. The unit was assisted in the investigation by the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General and the Wethersfield Police Department.
