Dec. 21--CROWN POINT -- Antique construction methods helped save the home at 171 Sugar Hill Road from a fire here Friday evening.
Essex County Dispatch put out a call for the fire at 6:10 p.m. with Crown Point Volunteer Fire Department responding.
Mutual aid was also provided by Ticonderoga Fire and Port Henry Fire was on standby at the Crown Point station.
The home is owned by Steve and Judy Mildon, according to Crown Point Fire Chief Joseph Norton.
Firefighters arrived at the home to find an active fire within a wall of the home.
"It was an older house, so instead of having studded walls like houses have now, it's rough-cut (2-by-4s) that held it in check so it couldn't travel through the wall," Norton said.
The home was built in the 1800s, he said.
Firefighting was a straightforward effort with firefighters cutting into the wall to reach and extinguish the fire.
Norton said he would describe the overall damage to the home as "minimal."
Thermal-imaging cameras were later used to check for any remaining hotspots.
The Mildons were able to remain in their home, Norton said, and they have insurance on the house.
The cause of the fire was determined to be ashes from a wood stove being discarded too close to the home, Norton said.
