"We basically had to let the lower portion of the people go that were not performing ... or weren't performing as strongly as some of the other ones, is probably more fair," Sears said.
Of the 121 agents let go, five were licensed, she said.
Several workers, women ranging in age from their 20s to 50s, described the layoff but declined to give their names for fear that it might harm their job searches.
They said that from statements by company officials, they were led to believe that their jobs would survive the open enrollment period. They described stressful working conditions and disputed the idea that workers who kept jobs were truly better performers than some who were fired.
Sears said the company's door remains open for rehiring workers when needed.
