SOUTH AUSTIN

Business insurance class offered

The city of Austin Small Business Program will host a class on insurance and protection from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Entrepreneurial Center of Austin, Suite 110, 4029 S. Capital of Texas Highway.

This class will include tips on how to properly protect a small business, an outline of the different insurance coverages that are available to business owners and how to best select an insurance agent and company.

The cost is $25, and registration is required at bit.ly/2wPjmSi.

EAST AUSTIN

Senior center has social Friday

The Conley-Guerrero Senior Activity Center, at 808 Nile St., will celebrate its 30th anniversary Friday with a social at 9:30 a.m. and a program at 10 a.m..

Frank Cooksey, who was mayor of Austin when the Conley-Guerrero Senior Activity Center first opened, will be in attendance.

The center has more than 500 registered seniors each year from Austin and the surrounding areas who come together to participate in activities and programs.

LAKEWAY

Memorial Day ceremony Friday

Bryan Degner, director of education at the National Museum of the Pacific War, will be the guest speaker at the Lakeway Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Friday at Emmaus Catholic Parish, 1718 Lohmans Crossing.

The service will include the the Standing Military Committee, members of the Lohmann's Ford Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Lakeway Police Department Color Guard, the Lakeway Sing Along Choir and the Lakeway Heritage Commission.

The Lakeway Police Department's Color Guard will present the colors, and veterans of all the branches of U.S. armed forces will post service flags. U.S. Air Force Retired Maj. Gen. Rod Kelly will emcee the event.

WILLIAMSON COUNTY

GEORGETOWN

Sheriff's junior academy set

The Williamson County sheriff's office will host its Junior Deputy Academy from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in various summer sessions at the sheriff's office, 508 Rock St.

Applications are due by 5 p.m. Friday. Sessions will be for ages 9-11 on June 11-14 and July 23-26, and for ages 12-14 on June 18-21 and July 30-Aug. 2.

The junior cadets will investigate mock crime scenes, collect evidence, tour the sheriff's office and county jail, obtain Stop the Bleed training and will get hands-on experience with advanced tactical equipment and self-defense techniques.

Each session is limited to 25 students, and applications will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no cost for the program, but students will need to bring their lunch each day.

ROUND ROCK

Apply for Chamber program

The Round Rock Chamber has opened applications for the Entrepreneurship Round Rock program, which aims to strengthen and expand the community's current entrepreneurial ecosystem.

The deadline to apply is July 13.

The program aims to provide individuals who are just beginning or considering an entrepreneurial enterprise a supportive and nurturing environment where they can thoroughly evaluate their respective business models.

The four-session course, each lasting two-and-a-half hours, will include small group discussions that are focused on strengthening the participants' business models. Classes will be in September.

ROUND ROCK

Learn to attract butterflies

A program on attracting butterflies to a garden, part of the Water Wise Landscape Series, will begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Round Rock Public Library, 216 E. Main St.

Attendees will learn tips to create a butterfly habitat in a personal landscape by introducing a water source and feeders, as well as how to select the right plants as host species for caterpillars. Other topics will include native and adapted flowers that provide long-lasting blooms with nectar sources for butterflies.

SAN MARCOS

Open house on parks plan

The San Marcos Parks and Recreation Department will host an open house for the department's Parks, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the San Marcos Activity Center, 501 E. Hopkins St.

City staff and representatives from Halff Associates Inc., will be on hand to make a brief presentation and answer questions.

The plan is in the design stages, and adoption of the plan should occur by fall 2018 after presentation to the parks board and City Council. The current plan was adopted in 2010.
