April 28--The Federal Emergency Management Agency has officially stated that Valley City can maintain a section of it floodwall on the city's southeast side.
U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., announced Wednesday that the federal agency would not require Valley City to reroute a portion of a floodwall completed in 2016. The floodwall went through property purchased from FEMA's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program and the deed to the property restricted what could and could not be placed on the property. FEMA was considering requiring Valley City to move the 140-foot section of the floodwall so it wouldn't cross the property. Removing the wall would have cost at least $150,000 according to information from Heitkamp.
Heitkamp included a fix for the situation in the last spending bill signed by President Donald Trump. U.S. Sen. John Hoeven also worked to resolve the situation.
