Capital (Annapolis, MD)

YEREVAN, Armenia - Serzh Sargsyan, who ruled Armenia for 10 years, resigned Monday as prime minister after thousands of people poured into the streets to protest his political maneuvering to cling to power in this former Soviet republic.

The stunning development touched off jubilation in the capital of Yerevan, with car horns blaring and people dancing, hugging and waving the tricolor Armenian flag. The opposition called for a meeting with the acting prime minister to discuss a "peaceful transfer of power."

Sargsyan, 63, was president of the Caucasus Mountains nation from 2008 until term limits forced him out in March. But parliament, which is controlled by his party, voted to reduce the powers of the presidency and give them to the prime minister, ultimately installing Sargsyan in that post last week.

The parliament's action had triggered massive anti-government protests in Yerevan since April 13. A rally Sunday attracted about 50,000 people, and about 200 soldiers joined the protesters Monday.

In his surprise announcement posted on his website, Sargsyan said he should not have resisted the opposition's demands.

"I was wrong," Sargsyan said. "The movement on the streets is against my rule. I'm complying with their demands."

The government quickly named former Prime Minister Karen Karapetian as acting prime minister. A Sargsyan ally, he also was mayor of Yerevan and worked in Russia for five years as a top executive of the state-controlled gas giant Gazprom.

Prince heirs sue Illinois hospital over his care during overdose

MINNEAPOLIS - Prince's heirs are suing Walgreens and the Illinois hospital that treated him after he suffered a drug overdose just a week before he died.

The musician was 57 when he was found in an elevator at his Paisley Park estate on April 21, 2016. He died from an accidental overdose of the powerful synthetic opioid fentanyl.

About a week earlier, his plane made an emergency stop in Moline, Ill., when he suffered from an opioid overdose and had to be revived by paramedics.

The wrongful-death lawsuit filed Friday in Cook County, Ill., alleges that a doctor and pharmacist at Trinity Medical Center failed to appropriately treat and investigate Prince's overdose, contributing to his death.

Walgreens and the hospital's parent company declined to comment, citing pending litigation.

GOP lawmakers to get FBI documents on Clinton probe

WASHINGTON - Two House Republican committee chairmen say the Justice Department has agreed to provide them with documents on the Hillary Clinton investigation that they've been requesting for months.

The deal was struck after Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., and Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., the respective leaders of the Judiciary and Oversight committees, met this month with the U.S. attorney, John Lausch, who has been selected to respond to Republican demands for documents.

The committees have been investigating the FBI's handling of the Clinton email investigation, which ended in 2016 without criminal charges.

The Judiciary Committee issued a subpoena to the Justice Department in March for records of the investigation.

Remnants of Mexico migrant caravan closer to U.S. border

MEXICO CITY - The remnants of a caravan of Central American migrants protested in northern Mexico on Monday, even as once again they drew angry tweets from President Donald Trump.

The mainly Central American migrants are demanding better treatment and many are planning to request asylum, either in the United States or Mexico.

"We are asking the government and migration authorities to respect the right to seek asylum," said caravan organizer Irineo Mujica.

The approximately 600 migrants arrived in the northern city of Hermosillo aboard trains over the weekend.

Trump tweeted Monday that "I have instructed the Secretary of Homeland Security not to let these large Caravans of people into our Country."

Researcher in Facebook data scandal apologizes

SAN FRANCISCO - The academic at the center of the Facebook data-misuse scandal apologized for his actions, but said he thought he did nothing wrong at the time.

Cambridge University researcher Aleksandr Kogan's comments came in an interview with CBS's "60 Minutes" on Sunday.

Data analytics firm Cambridge Analytica misused personal information from as many as 87 million Facebook accounts. Cambridge Analytica received the data from a personality-quiz app that Kogan created. That app collected data on both users and their Facebook friends.

Kogan said he thought the way his app mined data was on the up-and-up at the time. He says he's since changed his mind, saying he had been acting "quite naively" in assuming that users weren't too concerned about what apps did with their data.

Court denies copyright for selfie-taking monkey

SAN FRANCISCO - U.S. copyright law does not allow lawsuits that seek to give animals rights to photographs or other original work, limiting such claims to humans, a federal appeals court ruled Monday in a novel case over a series of well-known selfies taken by a monkey in Indonesia.

The decision by a unanimous, three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court ruling that also dismissed the lawsuit by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals against a photographer whose camera was used by a crested macaque to take the photos in 2011.

PETA's 2015 suit against David Slater sought financial control of the photographs - including a now-famous selfie of the monkey's toothy grin - for the benefit of the animal named Naruto in Indonesia.

A family spokesman said former President George H.W. Bush has been hospitalized in Houston with an infection, just after attending the funeral of his wife, Barbara. Jim McGrath wrote on Twitter that the 93-year-old Bush is "responding to treatments and appears to be recovering."

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey pushed lawmakers Monday to approve big teacher raises ahead of a threat by educators to launch the first-ever statewide strike. The governor wants to increase teacher pay 20 percent by 2020; educators fault his plan because it didn't include an overall boost in funding or raises for support staff.
