Amy Coney Barrett Nomination All About Killing Obamacare, Pelosi Says
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi accused Republicans of trying to scrap Obamacare by rushing through President Trump’s nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court.
“Anyone that President Trump would have appointed was there to undo the Affordable Care Act. That is why he was in such a hurry, so he could have someone in place for the oral arguments, which begin Nov. 10,” the California Dem said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
“If you have a preexisting medical condition, that benefit will be gone,” she continued. “If you are a woman, we’ll be back to a time where being a woman is a preexisting medical condition. If your children are on your policy -- say your adult children are on your policy -- no longer will they be, and that in the time of a pandemic.”
Trump nominated Barrett to the Supreme Court on Saturday, just over a week after iconic Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died.
The move drew outrage from Dems, who said the nomination shouldn’t come until after the Nov. 3 presidential election. They noted Senate Republicans blocked former President Barack Obama’s effort to fill a Supreme Court vacancy in the last year of his administration, on purported grounds that the move shouldn’t come until after the 2016 election.
Trump on Sunday crowed over the prospect of a Barrett appointment.
“Obamacare will be replaced with a MUCH better, and FAR cheaper, alternative if it is terminated in the Supreme Court. Would be a big WIN for the USA!” he tweeted.
The president has repeatedly promised to propose an alternative health care plan to Obama’s Affordable Care Act but has yet to take action.
Asked whether she was concerned the Supreme Court would overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion, Pelosi said health care was her bigger worry.
“Right now what is on the table is a court case that Republicans have advocated for overturning -- the Affordable Care Act,” she said. “That is the case that is on the table in the Supreme Court. So that is where our concern is.”
