Authorities believe
Moments before their trial was scheduled to start with jury selection Tuesday, the defendants both pleaded no contest to a felony charge of arson of a building. The charge comes with a sentence of two to six years in prison.

Initially, Britt was charged with aggravated arson for having a prior arson conviction. That charge was dropped as part of the plea deal. Court records show Britt was sentenced in 2005 to 16 months in state prison for arson in Kern County.
While awaiting trial, Smith launched a Turlock-based real estate development company called Consolidated Reliance and serves as its CEO. Smith still faces five felony counts in two separate criminal cases on suspicion of writing bad checks and is scheduled to return to court
