Thomasville celebrates the season

Nov. 30--THOMASVILLE -- After wrestling with Black Friday sales, some families took the time to visit a winter wonderland in the middle of downtown Thomasville on Saturday.

Winterfest, a collaboration between local businesses Institutional Insurance and Southern Sister, was open for business and attracting a crowd.

The event offers residents a chance to skate on a synthetic skating rink, sit by a fire and roast s'mores, go tubing on a 30-foot high inflatable ski slope and take pictures in front of an edible 12-foot high gingerbread house by Sprinkle of Sugar Bakery.

Neal Grimes and his family were visiting from Southport and decided to join in on the fun. His four kids tubed on the inflatable, played on the playground and skated at the skating rink.

"We are vacationing in town and had read about it online before we left," Grimes said. "We thought we would come and see what it was all about. It was something to do on a Saturday before we head back."

Winterfest runs through Dec. 29 and will open every weeknight 4 to 8 p.m. Weekend hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays and 2 to 8 p.m. Sundays.

Admission is $10 per person and includes skate rental.

There also was access to the playground, cornhole set-ups and a Christmas tree lot.

"We were looking for something that our grandchildren could do, and we decided that this would be a great thing to do," said Carol Frank. "The kids are having a ball."
