TDI Fraud Unit Names McWhorter Employee of the Year

AUSTIN, Texas, May 7 -- The Texas Department of Insurance issued the following news release:
Lt. Donald McWhorter is the 2014 Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) Fraud Unit Employee of the Year. McWhorter was recognized for his successful career in law enforcement and fraud investigation during the 16th Annual TDI Fraud Conference held at the Austin Convention CenterApril 29-May 1.
"We are fortunate as TDI employees - and as Texas insurance consumers -- to have Donald McWhorter as a co-worker and dedicated insurance fraud investigator," said Commissioner of Insurance Julia Rathgeber. "I would like to congratulate Donald on his outstanding career and thank him for continuing to serve the State of Texas."
"Don McWhorter has shown his steadfast devotion to assisting the Fraud Unit in investigating insurance fraud," said Jeff Kirk, Chief Investigator for the TDI Fraud Unit. "His expertise has been invaluable in our efforts to combat fraud and protect consumers."
McWhorter currently serves as a Lieutenant in the TDI Fraud Unit who specializes in health care fraud investigations. He began his career as a patrol and tactical operations officer with the Lubbock Police Department. He was a criminal investigator for the former Texas Department of Human Resources for nearly 30 years, retiring in 2002 as Deputy Inspector General responsible for 125 employees investigating fraud statewide. Also in 2002, McWhorter joined the TDI Fraud Unit and was quickly promoted to Senior Sergeant in 2003. He has served as Lieutenant with the unit since 2009.
