PEARLS of Hampton County Awards Grants

HILTON HEAD, S.C., April 28 -- The Community Foundation of the Lowcountry issued the following news release:

PEARLS of Hampton County, a fund of the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, awarded $4,625 in grants in the area of Womens Health at its annual meeting and celebration held on April 27, 2014.

Grants were awarded to:

Beaufort/Jasper/Hampton Comprehensive Health Services in the amount of $1,000 to extend existing time period to provide mammograms to uninsured women over 40 years of age in Hampton County

Citizens Opposed to Domestic Abuse (CODA) in the amount of $750 to train medical professionals in Hampton County on recognizing the signs and symptoms of domestic violence, intervention techniques and CODA's services.

Lawtonville Baptist Church in the amount of $800 for a Women's Health Fair and takeaway materials.

Low Country Rural Health Education Consortium in the amount of $2,075 for the Walk Fit program for women in crisis.

In addition, grants were also announced from the Betti Crosby - PEARLS Early Childhood Education Fund.

A grant of $500 was awarded to Varnville Elementary for the iRead with iPad project.

A grant of $1,000 was awarded to to Hampton County First Steps to purchase books for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.

PEARLS stands for Philanthropic Empowerment Among Rural Lowcountry Sisters and was established at the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry in 2008 to fulfill the mission of connecting women who care with causes that matter. Contributions are distributed to nonprofit organizations in Hampton County recommended by the members; and used to build an endowment to insure grantmaking in perpetuity.
