No ticket given to Fayetteville driver who crashed car into DMV office [The Fayetteville Observer, N.C.]

Nov. 18--A woman whose car crashed through the window of the Division of Motor Vehicles' Elm Street office Wednesday won't be ticketed in the accident, authorities said.

An accident report says Annie Gore, 77, was at fault, said police spokesman Gavin MacRoberts. That means that Gore and her insurance company can be liable for damages or injury litigation, he said.

Gore was completing a road test for renewal of her driver's license when she pulled into a parking space in front of the DMV shortly after noon, police said. Gore was attempting to brake her 2008 Acura when she stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake, according to B.L. Pruett, the DMV examiner who was riding with her.

The car leaped the curb and slammed into the large window at the front of the office, coming to rest halfway inside the building.

Several people who were seated on chairs were knocked to the floor. Two people were taken by ambulance to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with nonlife-threatening injuries, authorities said. At least three other people sought medical treatment on their own.

A DMV spokeswoman in Raleigh said that Gore did not receive the renewal for her license, but the official did not give a reason why.

The impact caused about $50,000 damage to the building, but most of it was cosmetic, according to property owner Cam Stout.

The office is expected to be closed for at least a week.

Residents who need to do business with the DMV can do so at the second Fayetteville location, 2439 Gillespie St. near the Crown Coliseum.
