New Flood Zone Maps for Broward County

DAVIE, Fla., Nov. 7 -- The town of Davie issued the following news release:

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is preparing the first comprehensive review of flood zones throughout Broward County in 14 years, using a new "vertical datum," that enables consistent comparisons of land and water elevations across the nation.

According to preliminary estimates, 197 parcels in the Town of Davie will be added to the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) and 18,405 parcels will be removed from the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA).

Property owners are urged to check their status under the new maps during a series of public meetings in November 2011. Please review the public meeting schedule below.

Property owners can also check their status by visiting this website: http://www.broward.org/Regulation/Engineering/FloodZoneMaps/Pages/ProposedNewFloodMaps.aspx

New flood maps are needed due to the dynamic nature of flood hazard conditions, the availability of updated elevation data, improved technology for identifying flood hazards and to account for developments that can affect flood zone boundaries. The new digital flood maps will help community officials and citizens be better prepared for flood-related disasters by providing an official depiction of flood hazards for Davie and the rest of Broward County.

The updated flood maps will become effective after a series of public open house meetings and an appeal and adoption process. It is anticipated that updated flood maps will be adopted December 2012 and will then be used for:

* determining flood insurance purchase requirements

* determining flood insurance rates

* establishing minimum finished floor elevations for new construction and substantial improvements to existing structures

By adopting the new flood maps, Broward County is assured that FEMA will offer assistance during emergencies and provide flood insurance coverage for county residents.

Public Meetings to View Proposed Flood Maps

Davie residents will be able to view the newly revised preliminary Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (DFIRMs) at a series of open house meetings in November. Open house meeting dates and locations can be found below. Davie residents can attend any of the public meetings listed.

Property owners, realtors, lenders and insurance agents are encouraged to attend a meeting to learn more about the local flood risks. Attendees will be able to view the new preliminary flood maps. Informational tables will be available where federal and local government representatives will be able to address questions on flood insurance and the appeals process.
