STORY SUMMARY:
Just like people, dogs have their good days and bad days but for the 4.5 million dog bite victims each year, a dogs' bad day can result in serious injury or even death. In 2013, State Farm^® had 3,700 dog bite claims and paid more than $104 million as a result of dog bites. Because dog bites continue to be a serious health and safety issue, the National Dog Bite Prevention Week^® (May 18-24, 2014) coalition is reinforcing the importance of pet owner responsibility and the need for continued public education regarding the prevention of dog bites.

The National Dog Bite Prevention Week Kick-Off Event on Thursday, May 15^th will include letter carriers recounting their dog attacks. Veterinarians and representatives of the medical community will also provide tips on dog attack prevention, responsible pet ownership and dispel pit bull stereotyping. Representatives from the insurance industry will discuss dog bite claims and homeowner liability and internationally-renowned dog trainer Victoria Stilwell, her daughter Alex, and dog bite victim Kelly Voigt will join Elle the pit bull and her handler Leah Brewer in a dog safety demonstration.
