Manatt Expands Insurance Regulatory Practice in Albany

Business Wire, Inc.

ALBANY, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, announced that Jay B. Martin has joined the firm’s Albany office as a partner in the Insurance Regulatory practice. Martin comes to Manatt from Dewey & LeBoeuf.

Martin has over 30 years of experience representing insurance companies, producers, buyers and trade associations with respect to a broad range of issues of importance to the insurance community. His insurance regulatory practice runs the gamut from strategic advice, product design and approval, regulatory compliance, market conduct and financial examination advice to reinsurance transactions, as well as most other areas related to participation in the insurance business.

“Jay is highly regarded in the insurance community and brings a long-standing record for excellence to Manatt,” said Marcia D. Alazraki, co-chair of the firm’s Insurance Industry practice. “His extensive work advising clients on matters relating to all aspects of insurance regulation fits perfectly within Manatt’s significant capabilities and established platform. We are pleased to welcome him to the firm.”

In addition to working closely with the New York State Department of Financial Services and other regulatory bodies, Martin also appears regularly before the governor’s office, other executive agencies and the state Legislature, on behalf of his insurance industry clients.

“Jay’s stellar reputation, decades of industry knowledge and expansive network of strong professional relationships throughout state government make him a perfect fit with our Albany-based regulatory and legislative practice,” added James W. Lytle, administrative partner of Manatt’s Albany office.

In 2010, Martin was named one of 22 international Fellows in Harvard University’s Advanced Leadership Initiative. The prestigious fellowship is designed to enhance and leverage the skills of highly accomplished, experienced leaders who want to apply their talents to solve a range of critical national and global challenges.

A past president of the National Conference of Insurance Legislators Industry Education Council, Martin earned a B.A. from the State University of New York and a J.D. from Boston University School of Law.

Manatt’s Insurance Regulatory practice encompasses representation of a broad range of clients in connection with matters relating to all aspects of insurance regulation. Manatt’s regulatory lawyers have represented many of the most prominent domestic and national insurers with respect to mergers and acquisitions and other corporate reorganizations, insurance department investigations, financial examinations and market conduct matters, product development and approval, regulatory filings, reinsurance, insolvency and liquidation matters and other regulatory issues that face insurers and related entities. The team has also advised financial institutions in connection with insurance-related operations and counseled clients in connection with regulatory issues arising out of financial problems facing financial guaranty, mortgage guaranty and title insurance insurers.
