Lady Cougars close out perfect regular season region record [Cordele Dispatch, Ga.]

Sept. 30--CORDELE -- Crisp County High got its closest call of the season in a Region 1-AAAA game Thursday against Worth County, but when the contest was over it owned a 6-0 win and a third straight league title.

"The girls were really happy to finish region play undefeated (7-0) and make our Senior Day observation a success (for 12th graders Lauren Clements, Danielle Arnett, Madison Alexander, Morgan Kimbrel and Sumer Powell)," Lady Cougars coach Ben Robbins said afterwards.

"We had a very nice ceremony beforehand to honor them and then enjoyed a nice meal afterwards with the entire team. It was just a good day all the way around."

Things did start off slowly for Crisp which in altering its overall record to 16-8, scored only one run through the first four innings as a Worth team that with a win could have moved into a tie for first played its host tough.

The only run the Lady Cougars got during that time came in the third when Kimbrel reached on an error, took second on Alexander's sacrifice bunt and scored when Julia Davis ripped a single to right.

As it turned out, that lone tally would have been enough to make Megan Coleman the winning hurler as in mowing down Lady Rams batters she turned in a route-going two-hitter while fanning 11 and walking three.

Coleman's teammates did get her five insurance runs in the fifth that began with Alexander rapping a double before yielding the basepaths to pinchrunner Dallas Outlaw who came home on a single by Davis.

Lauren Clements later followed with another one-bagger to score Davis. Torie Holmes stroked the third hit of the frame before her courtesy runner, Alexis Meadows, joined Clements in working a double steal.

Both came home when Bailey Leger stroked a single. Leger, who took second on a throw to the plate that almost resulted in Meadows being out, then scored as Savannah Thompson blooped a two-out pop-up to short left where it was dropped by the Worth shortstop.

"I was proud of Megan's pitching accomplishments as she did a great job for us," said Robbins whose team had dropped a 6-2 decision on a rain-threatened Wednesday to Veterans High.

"We did have to wait a while for our bats to come around but they eventually did just that as we wound up with eight hits on the day. We also played well defensively as overall the girls never lost sight of what they had to get done in order to come out on top."

Davis and Leger each finished with a pair of hits and RBIs for the Lady Cougars who will end regular season play on Thursday in a 4 p.m. doubleheader at Colquitt County.

When region competition is held Oct. 7-10 in Albany, Crisp will be the No. 1 seed.
