GEICO: Are You Covered for Road Trips to Mexico and Canada?
WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Road trips can define the summer season for many travelers, and if you are planning a trip to Mexico or Canada, there are some important insurance details GEICO would like you to know:
Mexico
- Driving in Mexico requires an additional auto insurance policy because your U.S. auto policy is not valid in Mexico. The additional policy will cover your vehicle in the event that you are in an accident while driving within the country’s borders. Some policies may cover certain legal expenses if you are taken into custody related to an accident.
- “If you find yourself involved in an accident, it must be reported while you are still in Mexico,†said John Zinno, assistant vice president of GEICO’s property agency. “Also, contact the local consular office if you find yourself involved in an accident. They will help you obtain additional information that could assist you in legal matters.â€
- GEICO offers auto, motorcycle or recreational vehicle (RV) policies for your Mexican vacation that can be purchased by calling GEICO at 1-888-713-3312.
Canada
- If you are taking your car to Canada, you don’t need to worry about getting a separate policy, but you do need to make sure to contact GEICO to obtain Canadian ID cards one to two weeks in advance. The advanced notice will give GEICO time to send your ID cards, which act as your proof of insurance while you are in Canada.
- If involved in an accident, you can report it as you normally would by calling GEICO or logging on to geico.com.
GEICO also recommends these tips while traveling:
- Remember to bring your passport, valid driver’s license and emergency contacts.
- Leave copies of your itinerary with a family member or friend.
- Familiarize yourself with local laws – details can be found on the State Department’s Web site at http://www.state.gov/.
- Register with the State Department at http://www.state.gov/travel/ – it’s free and confidential.
