Detroit Distracted Driving Accident Lawyer Gary Bloom Weighs In on Article about Dangers of Texting and Driving in Michigan

PR Web

Detroit, MI (PRWEB) October 19, 2014

Commenting on a CBS Detroit report about efforts to educate young drivers about the dangers of texting and driving, including the use of a driving simulator, Detroit car accident lawyer Gary Bloom said today it's imperative for teen drivers to establish safe driving habits early and for all drivers to make responsible decisions.

Bloom, a Detroit attorney with over 30 years' experience, based his comments on an October 1 article, "'I Used to Think I Was Pretty Good at Texting and Driving,' Said Student Using Driving Simulator, Striking Pedestrian." The article reported about a recent effort by Allstate Insurance Company to educate teen drivers about the dangers of texting, including the use of a driving simulator designed to give drivers a first-person view of accident risks.

"Texting and driving is dangerous and illegal in Michigan, but that doesn't mean people are willing put their phones down while driving," Bloom said. "Everyone should realize the consequences of texting accidents. Is that message you send worth the risk of destroying someone's life? Clearly, work needs to be done to educate drivers and enforce traffic safety laws designed to keep people in Michigan safe."

CBS Detroit reported that the driving simulator required participants to send and receive text messages while engaging in everyday tasks such as obeying speed limits, traffic signals and staying safe distances from other vehicles, pedestrians and other bystanders.
According to the article, young adults using the driving simulator reported missing traffic signals and striking pedestrians. Teen drivers were asked to sign a pledge to avoid texting while driving after participating in the study.

"Many drivers may not think twice about reaching for the phone while driving. They might even believe that they simply won't ever be involved in an accident. We urge all drivers to think again," Bloom said. "Texting and driving and cell phone use cause serious accidents every day, including car wrecks in Detroit, Livonia and surrounding communities. It can happen to you in a split second, but the consequences can last a lifetime."
