DaddyRabbit Band to headline Cancer Survivors celebration

July 30--While you are reading this news article, at least one person will be diagnosed with cancer.

Logan County will celebrate Cancer Survivors Day on Sat., August 2, at the Logan Regional Cancer Center -- 601 Holden Road. Activities will begin at noon. The event will include food, prizes, entertainment and live music from the Daddy Rabbit Band.

From the moment of diagnosis, every cancer patient is a survivor. Survivors are people of all races and income levels; they are little boys, moms, and grandparents; they are coworkers, friends, and loved ones.

Cancer Survivors Day is a day for survivors to come together and celebrate life, as well as honor caregivers and medical professionals who are helping in the battle against cancer. It is also a day to call attention to the issues and challenges faced by cancer survivors, from choosing treatments to obtaining affordable insurance and encouraging survivor-friendly legislation.

A study provided by the West Virginia Cancer Plan estimates that approximately 1 in 12 adults in W.Va. have been diagnosed with cancer.

According to the West Virginia Cancer Registry 2012 Annual Report, the most common cancers diagnosed among West Virginia residents include lung and bronchus (18.6 percent), prostate (13.0 percent) female breast (11.9 percent) and colon and rectum (10.7 percent).

West Virginia adults who have been diagnosed with cancer have survived for an average of 12.3 years. The results indicate that 14.4 percent of cancer survivors in the state are currently in treatment and 85.6 percent are not in treatment.
