Car Accident Attorney Gary Bloom Comments on Report about Detroit Auto Insurance Rates, Number of Uninsured Motorists

PR Web

Detroit, MI (PRWEB) September 21, 2014

Commenting on a CBS Detroit article stating that Detroit has some of the most expensive car insurance rates in the nation in part because of uninsured drivers, attorney Gary Bloom said today drivers should make sure to purchase uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage to protect themselves.

"You might be tempted to pass on uninsured or underinsured coverage because perhaps you feel like you're already paying a lot for coverage," Bloom said. "But that could end up costing you more money if you are in an accident with an uninsured or underinsured driver."

Bloom, a lawyer in Detroit with more than 30 years of experience, based his comments on a September 11 article, "Survey: Detroit Has Most Expensive Auto Insurance Rates In Nation." The article states that Detroit's high rates are due in part by the high number of drivers who lack insurance.

Drivers across the Detroit metro area pay up to 165 percent more than the national average for car insurance, according to the article.

Bloom said drivers who are involved in accidents with an uninsured or underinsured driver can pursue a claim against their own policy.

"Your uninsured motorist coverage means your own insurance carrier will cover the at-fault driver who does not have insurance," Bloom said. "We see many uninsured motorist claims in cases involving hit-and-run drivers. Obviously, it's impossible to file a claim against a driver who cannot be found. Without UIM coverage, you may face long-term financial hardship after an accident."

According to CBS Detroit, the study was conducted by website http://www.insurancequotes.com and examined the average premiums in the 25 largest metropolitan areas across the United States. While Detroit residents paid up to 165 percent more than the national average, the article revealed drivers in the next closest city, New York City, only paid 36 percent more than the national average.

Officials from insurancequotes.com told CBS Detroit that they believed premiums were higher than the national average because of Michigan's status as a no-fault insurance state, requiring insurance companies to compensate injury victims regardless of who is at fault. Furthermore, the report states that Michigan is the only state where car insurance includes unlimited personal injury protection for accident victims left with lifetime accident-related expenses.

"It's never easy knowing what to do after a car accident, whether you're in an accident with an uninsured driver or someone who carries insurance," Bloom said. "That's why it's important to speak with an attorney to learn about your rights. A personal injury lawyer can help pursue compensation and hold the negligent individual accountable."
