Business Milestones [Winston-Salem Journal, N.C.]
Jan. 10--Drs. Alicia C. Walters, Sandra B. Farland and John L. Turner have joined the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Turner, an assistant professor, is seeing patients at the Peace Haven Family Medicine Clinic, but also has a 50 percent academic commitment to the department as he assumes the new role of co-director for the Family Medicine Residency Program at the medical school. He shares the directorship with Dr. Anne Hiott Barham. Walters and Farland are clinical instructors in the Department of Family and Community Medicine and are also seeing patients at the Peace Haven clinic. Both served as chief resident in 2008-09 in the Wake Forest Baptist Family Medicine Residency Program.
ISP Sports recently named Mark McKeen to the newly created position of senior vice president and chief information officer. He is a former vice president of administrative services for the Lincoln Financial Group.
The American Society of Radiologic Technologists recently bestowed the status of Life Member to Polly Story of Pfafftown. Story's professional career consists of more than 50 years of active membership with the American Society of Radiologic Technologists.
Michael Shelton recently joined Piedmont Federal Savings Bank as the chief financial officer. He comes to Piedmont Federal with more than 20 years of banking experience.
Greensboro College has named Marci Peace its vice president of finance. She has been the college's controller since January 2006 and acting chief financial officer since April 2009.
Jacob E. Dahlin has joined G.W. Mountcastle Insurance Agency at its new office at 138 S. Cherry St. in Winston-Salem as a business insurance and risk management specialist.
Bank of the Carolinas in Mocksville has hired Edward Lewandowski as the senior vice president of its newly created consumer services division. His past positions include the president and chief executive of Cohutta Banking Co. in Chatsworth, Ga., and a realtor/broker with Keller Williams Realtors and Allen Tate Realtors in Winston-Salem.
Leonard Ryden Burr Real Estate has hired Louise Campbell and Molly Haus as agents. Campbell, who has more than three years of local real-estate experience is a previous owner of Leon's Restaurant near Old Salem. Haus has been an active volunteer in the Winston-Salem community for more than 20 years.
William E. "Bill" Wright, an employee benefits attorney, has joined Womble Carlyle's Winston-Salem office. Wright spent more than 20 years at Kilpatrick Stockton. Since 2006, he has been a law professor at Shandong University in Jinan, China.
Shannon Gilreath, a Wake Forest Fellow for the Interdisciplinary Study of Law, has received a cross-appointment to the core faculty of the university's Women's and Gender Studies Department as professor of Women's and Gender Studies.
The Digestive Health Center at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center has been recognized by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy for quality and safety. Wake Forest Baptist is one of 10 hospitals to be recognized nationwide.
Dr. Thomas Koontz, a retired Winston-Salem surgeon, has received Wingate University's Distinguished Alumni Award for professional excellence, personal dedication and community leadership. Koontz practiced in and served as president of Salem Surgical Associates for more than 35 years until his retirement in November 2008.
Leap Realty LLC in Winston-Salem was recently recognized at the 2009 NC Technology Association's Awards as a finalist for Leading Environmental Steward Company.
Sandee Hamrick has been awarded the Certified Residential Specialist designation by the Council of Residential Specialists. She is an ecobroker with Leap Realty.
Gov. Bev Perdue has appointed Sam Halsey of Jefferson to the Board of Transportation. He is the owner and broker in charge at Halsey Realty Co. and a U.S. Army veteran.
Senn Dunn insurance agency in Greensboro said that these employees have earned their Certified Insurance Counselor designation: Ivy Baker, an information systems associate; Kelly Whitener, a commercial account manager; and Amanda Brink, a commercial marketing associate. The following employees have earned their Certified Insurance Service Representative designation: Chris Bandy, a personal-insurance account manager; Chavonne Hill, a commercial bond associate; and Kelli Graves, a commercial account associate.
Mack Trucks Inc. said that its MP diesel engines have been certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board to meet the near-zero emissions standards that took effect this month.
Also, Volvo Trucks North America said that its D11 and D13 engines have been certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board as meeting 2010 diesel emissions standards.
Surrey Bank & Trust in Mount Airy recently received a distinguished 5-Star Superior rating for financial strength and stability from BauerFinanical Inc.
Judy Boggs, the president and owner of Home Loving Senior Care, said that the agency recently became licensed by the State of North Carolina and is now approved for nonmedical and medical home care.
Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin has appointed Murray White III to the N.C. Joint Underwriting Association and the N.C. Insurance Underwriting Association. White is the vice president of Murray M. White Inc., an independent-insurance agency in High Point.
For the second year in a row, the City of High Point and its High Point Economic Development Corp. have won a national award for its distribution and warehousing industry sector. Expansion Solutions Magazine named High Point a winner of its 2009 Awards of Excellence in the distribution / warehousing category.
Bald Eagle Technologies said that it has achieved the Advanced Unified Communications Specialization from Cisco. This specialization recognizes Bald Eagle Technologies as having fulfilled the training requirements and program prerequisites to sell, deploy and support Cisco Unified Communications solutions.

McKim & Creed, which has a surveying office in Greensboro, has received the top honor for engineering excellence by the American Council of Engineering Companies of North Carolina. McKim & Creed was presented the "2010 Henry A. Stikes Grand Conceptor Award" for its use of mobile scanning technology along five sections of roadway and three sections of railway in North Carolina. McKim & Creed also received "Honors Awards" for its work on the James A. Loughlin (Northside) Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion and Upgrade in Wilmington and the N.C. Center for Automotive Research Phase 1A in Northampton County.
