Study Shows Trampoline Injuries Cause More Than One Million ER Visits: New York Personal Injury Lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm Offers Tips on Preventing Injuries

PR Web

New York, N.Y (PRWEB) June 02, 2014

Victims injured in trampoline accidents in the United States made more than 1 million visits to emergency rooms nationwide over 10 years, according to a new study conducted by researchers at the Indiana University School of Medicine. The results of the study were published online on March 28 in The Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics.

The study states that the injury toll between 2002 and 2011 included nearly 289,000 people mostly children and racked up emergency department costs of more than $1 billion of which $400 million was spent on broken bone injuries. About 60 percent of the broken bone injuries occurred in the upper extremities such as hands, fingers, forearms and elbows while lower extremity fractures were more common in the legs and ankles, the study states. Also, spine, head and rib injuries accounted for 4 percent of fractures, according to researchers. The study has pointed out that a vast majority of these trampoline injuries occurred at home.

New York personal injury lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm says these findings are truly significant and offer more proof that backyard trampolines cause greater harm than good for children's health. "The best way to prevent these types of injuries is to not use such a trampoline. As this study demonstrates, the injuries that occur as a result can be long term, painful and expensive to treat."

Homeowners could also face liability issues if an injury occurs on their property, Wilhelm said. "If a child is injured while playing on a trampoline, the person who is watching the child or the owner or occupant of the home could be held liable for the injuries and damages caused. This is why many homeowner's insurance policies exclude coverage for trampoline-related injuries."

There are several safety measures parents and homeowners can take to help prevent these types of serious injuries, Wilhelm says:

Make sure you read the manual and follow all of the manufacturer's safety instructions when assembling and using the trampoline.
The bars framing the trampoline should be properly padded to prevent bumps. Lower the surface to prevent falls from a higher elevation, which could result in more serious injuries.
Do not allow children younger than 6 on the trampoline.
Always supervise when the trampoline is in use.
Do not allow more than one child on the trampoline at a time.
