Humana, a health insurance company, has announced a $3 million grant to Xavier University of Louisiana'sOchsner College of Medicine in New Orleans for medical schools scholarships.
The award to the historically Black university will create the Humana Health Workforce Scholarship Fund to attract top talent and expand opportunities for students who face financial need to access a medical education. Humana and Ochsner aim to expand the physician pipeline to improve access to health care for communities across Louisiana and help address the national physician workforce shortage. The fund will enable the training of a larger pool of physicians ready to navigate patient issues at the intersection of behavioral health, preventive health, and chronic disease.
"As someone who grew up in Louisiana and as the son of a New Orleans physician, I understand the challenges many communities face in accessing care," said Humana president of insurance George Renaudin. "Having also spent more than a decade working within the state's healthcare system, I've seen firsthand the dedication of Louisiana's clinicians. This scholarship will help ensure more physicians are available where they're needed most."
