When I Grow Up I Want to Be….in Insurance?

LONDON, Feb. 14 -- RSA Insurance Group issued the following news release:

No matter how good or bad your careers teacher, did anyone grow up imagining they would work in insurance? The answer is no, yet the UK insurance industry employs 315,000 people and is the largest in Europe and the third largest in the world. Global insurer RSA is trying to tackle this issue by working directly with students across the UK by providing an insight into the industry whilst helping them to develop the soft skills needed for the workplace.

RSA employs 14,000 globally and has many sites in the UK. The insurer is working with schools in its local communities, sending in staff volunteers to design and deliver a series of interactive workshops which will not only help develop students' employability skills, but perhaps also encourage them to consider a career in insurance.

This week RSA staff worked with 30 Year 12 students aged 16-17 from Ken Stimpson Community School (KSCS) to help them think about what they want to do post school and university.

KSCS is a multicultural, comprehensive community school for students aged 11-18 years old. The school, situated in Werrington (north Peterborough) is a specialist International, Business and Enterprise School which enjoys excellent relationships with local businesses and partner schools in China, the USA and Malawi.

The engaging, fun and interactive workshops showed the students the broad range of careers in insurance - everything from the mathematical whizz of underwriting to the human interaction of major loss claims. The sessions also included advice and guidance about the skills and behaviours that get you employed including a practical understanding of what skills employers are looking for in potential employees.

Becky Dainty, RSA volunteer: "This was so much fun and a great opportunity to support a local school. The students were fantastic, but just needed an insight into the workplace to increase their confidence and help them to think about their next steps. Although, we are based only ten minutes from the school, they weren't either aware of what we do, or, the varied job opportunities at RSA. It was great to be able to chat through my career progression with them and hopefully I may be working with some of them in the near future!"
