What’s the bond status of the men allegedly involved in Hilton Head shooting?

Ben LeGrand, The Island Packet (Hilton Head Island, S.C.)Island Packet

Three suspects arrested and charged for their involvement in the July 4 Coligny Beach shooting have had their bonds deferred, according to the Fourteenth Circuit Solicitor’s Office. Three others have been bailed out.

Quazeir Davis, 17, Marcello Royal, 17, and Jayden Hawes, 18, have had their bonds deferred, and will have to wait to appear in front of a circuit court judge to have bond posted, Jeff Kidd, spokesman for the solicitor’s office, said.

All three young men have been charged with attempted murder, breach of peace and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to the Beaufort County Public Index. Davis and Royal were both also charged with unlawful possession of a weapon.

A fifth suspect, Jacob Malik Johnson, 22, was arrested July 8 and charged with breach of peace, aggravated in nature. Johnson posted his $250,000 bond on July 13 through bond company Bad Boyz Bail Bonds and was released from the Beaufort County Detention Center on the same day.

A sixth suspect, Amarion Riley, also 22, was arrested July 10 and charged with unlawful possession of a machine gun and breach of peace in an aggravated nature. Riley also received a $250,000 bond and was released July 10 after posting with the help of a bond company.

Riley is the first non-Beaufort County resident to be arrested in connection with the shooting, and the only suspect charged with possession of a machine gun. One firearm recovered from the shooting was converted to a machine gun, according to Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner at a July 5 press conference.

Christopher Capers, 17, was charged with accessory after the fact in connection with the Independence Day shooting.

Capers was released from prison after a bond company paid a $50,000 cash bond, Kidd said. His attorney could request a preliminary hearing, but if that doesn’t happen, he will likely appear in court once the Beaufort County court term starts again in late September, Kidd said.

The July 4 shooting at Coligny Beach, near the volleyball courts, left eight people injured. The shots erupted around 8:21 p.m. after a fist fight started between individuals from two separate groups, Sheriff Tanner said at the July 5 press conference.

The gunshots erupted shortly after the first punches were thrown, Tanner said Sunday. The initial cause for the tension was unclear from video captured on the Verkada surveillance on the beach, he said.

Deputies arrived within 17 seconds after the initial barrage of calls, Tanner said; the large amount of police and security presence because of the holiday helped with the fast response.
