Wendell 'Alan' Robertson (1940-2020)

Blade, The (Toledo, OH)

Dec. 28—Wendell Alan 'Alan' Robertson, a pharmacist turned real estate broker and community volunteer, died Dec. 13 at Kingston Residence of Perrysburg. He was 80.

He had Parkinson's disease, Midge Robertson, his wife of nearly 58 years, said.

Mr. Robertson retired about 2014 after at least 40 years as a real estate broker, most recently — for about 25 years — with Danberry Realtors in Toledo. Before that, he worked with Cavalear Realty, which he helped establish in the 1960s, also in Toledo.

In 2012, the Toledo Board of Realtors honored him with its distinguished-service award. He was also a two-time recipient of the board's Realtor-of-the-year award and a lifetime member of Northwest Ohio Realtors.

"He was a man of great integrity, loyalty, and values," Mrs. Robertson said. "He was a hardworking family man, who was devoted to his clients and the city of Toledo and enjoyed volunteering and giving back to the community."

"And he loved and respected his clients and the people he worked with. He had a twinkle in his eye. And he just shined to people," she said.

In his earlier years Mr. Robertson, who had a pharmacy degree from the University of Michigan, was a compound pharmacist in Toledo where he managed a small chain of pharmacies until he moved on to real estate and development because of a diminished demand for compound pharmacy, his wife said.

He also was a past president of the Sylvania Board of Zoning Appeals and of Swan Creek Retirement Village.

Additionally, he had volunteered for various local organizations such as Boys and Girls Club of Toledo, Toledo Chamber of Commerce, Toledo Botanical Gardens, and Toledo Museum of Art.

Mrs. Robertson remembered that he was often so busy that he had no time to change his clothes when heading to his children's athletic events.

"He didn't miss the events, but he'd show up in his business suit," she said.

Mr. Robertson was born Jan. 9, 1940 in Jackson, Mich. to Edith and Aldrich Robertson.

A 1958 Jackson High School graduate, he was an honor-roll student and class president. He then attended Albion College in Albion, Mich., for a couple of years before transferring to University of Michigan, from which he graduated with a pharmacy degree in 1965.

In 1963, he married his Albion College classmate Midge Taup.

In his spare time, he enjoyed golfing and playing gin rummy. His wife said "the highlight of his life was a hole-in-one on Number 12" at Inverness Club.

He was a 50-year-member at Christ Presbyterian Church, where was active on various planning committees and was an elder and a deacon.

His other memberships included Inverness Club, Toledo Club, Toledo Symphony, Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo Zoo, Alumni Association of the University of Michigan, and Alpha Tau Omega.

Along with his wife, surviving are his daughter, Lindsey Smith; sons, Brett, Blayne, and Jed Robertson; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were private. A memorial will be held at Inverness Club at a later date.

Arrangements are by Walker Funeral Home.

The family suggests tributes to the Greater Toledo Community Foundation Scholarship Fund or Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg Township.
