Wawanesa Insurance Becomes W Insurance

Business Wire

Same company. Same people. Same commitment. Now with a simpler name.

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Wawanesa General Insurance has changed its name to W Insurance, introducing a simpler, more modern brand while honoring the company’s heritage. While the name has changed, the company’s people, values, and the service members have come to know and trust remains the same, as does its continued commitment to protecting what matters most.

W Insurance is headquartered in San Diego and licensed to offer insurance in California. The company serves more than 300,000 policies, providing personal lines coverage including auto, homeowners, condo, and renters insurance. Policies are offered directly to consumers, allowing the company to deliver competitive rates and a seamless experience backed by trusted service. The company recently earned the #1 ranking for Customer Satisfaction among California auto insurers in the JD Power 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study SM.

As W Insurance, the company remains guided by its purpose, vision, and values.

“While our name has changed, who we are has not,” said Chris Henn, President, W Insurance. “Our mission is to serve our members, and that commitment continues to guide us every day. As W Insurance, we remain focused on supporting our members and the communities they call home, rooted in our values of putting people first, working as a team, and doing right by people. This change reflects a simpler name that modernizes our brand as we remain true to our values of service and dedication to protecting our members.”

The transition to W Insurance does not impact policyholders.

Coverage, premiums, policy terms, limits, account numbers, discounts, and claims handling remain the same. Members will continue working with the same team members and receiving the same award-winning service. No action is required. Existing proof of insurance and ID cards remain valid through their expiration dates, and coverage continues uninterrupted as long as policies remain active.

Members will begin seeing updated branding across communications, policy documents and online. As policies are renewed or new documents are issued, they will reflect the W Insurance name and logo. This is a rebrand only and does not affect coverage, claims handling, or policy servicing, and does not represent a transfer of policies to a new insurer.

“The transition to W Insurance is seamless for our members,” said Henn. “Our teams, processes, and service commitment remain unchanged, and we are focused on ensuring a smooth transition. Members will continue to receive the same dependable service they expect, now under the W Insurance name.”

W Insurance, formerly Wawanesa Insurance, has a long and established history.

The Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company was founded as a farmers’ mutual insurance carrier on September 25, 1896, in Wawanesa, Manitoba, Canada. In 1975, Wawanesa Mutual obtained a license to sell auto insurance in California as Wawanesa General Insurance. The U.S. corporate office opened in San Diego in April 1975.

Over time, Wawanesa General Insurance expanded its offerings to include auto, homeowners, condo, and renters insurance. In 2024, it was acquired by the Automobile Club of Southern California’s affiliated insurer. Today, W Insurance carries its legacy forward, with its members as its guiding light to provide excellent service and value.

“This marks an important milestone for our company and the members we serve,” said Henn. “We’re proud of our history and service to our members as we focus on the future. As W Insurance, we will continue to build on our legacy, delivering trusted protection and value to our members and communities.”
