Dec. 11--The victim of a fatal house fire in Wetumpka has been identified.
Rebecca Ann Nelson, 40, died in the Sunday night fire at 62 Shadow Lane, said Jennifer Bowen, spokeswoman for the Alabama Department of Insurance. The State Fire Marshal's office is investigating the cause of the blaze, along with the Wetumpka Fire Department.
Fire units were dispatched to the address at 11:10 p.m., she said. The cause of the fire has not been determined. The home had no working smoke detectors, Bowen said.
This is the first fire-related fatality for the year in Wetumpka, said Fire Chief Greg Willis. Shadow Lane is about three miles north of the department's stationhouse in Wallsboro. Wetumpka FD sent four units and two units from the Santuck Volunteer Fire Department assisted in the call.
She said every home should have working smoke detectors. A program with the Alabama Fire College provides free smoke detectors. For more information, call 1-800-241-2467 or go to the fire college's website at www.alabamafirecollege.org.
