Twitter account lovingly pokes fun at Columbus–read some of their funniest Tweets

July 06--Sometimes it can be good to laugh at yourself, and the "We Love Columbus!" Twitter account has jokes to spare. Created a year ago by a Hardaway High School graduate, the account pokes fun at Columbus and its many, well, "unique" qualities.

From the city's origin story, to a certain prominent local insurance giant, no subject is safe. Check out a few of their Tweets below:

The account is a project created by Alan Giles, a Columbus local born and raised, and a recent graduate of Columbia College in Chicago.

"The Twitter was kinda born out of an Instagram that I started for a school project," Giles said. "So I was home for spring break, and my buddy and I made a couple of dumb videos on Instagram, saying, 'Let's poke fun at a couple things in Columbus."

Later, he started the Twitter--but Giles wants to make clear that despite his digs at the Fountain City, "We Love Columbus!" is named that way for a reason.

"Growing up in Columbus, I feel like it's a city that sometimes is easy for people to complain about, and that can alter the way you see it," he said.

"When we see jokes we can relate to, it brings us a lot of joy and it makes us feel less alone, and then a little happier. So that's one thing I hope to do with the account. If I can capture at least the more humor-filled aspect of living in Columbus, everyone in Columbus can feel a little more included in this community."

Giles just graduated from Columbia College with a degree in comedy writing and performance--something he fell in love with while attending and eventually teaching at the Springer Theatre Academy.

"My mom, Patricia Giles, is the theater teacher at Hardaway High School, so theater has always been very important to me," he said.

Although he spends most of his time in Chicago now, Giles says he comes home often and is always up-to-date on the daily hum of the city. He doesn't think he'll be running out of material any time soon, either.

"One thing that's nice about Columbus is that it's a cool size -- it's big enough there is plenty of stuff to joke about, but small enough most citizens can understand what we're talking about. So I'm planning on going as long as I can."
