Top Workplaces 2023: Long Island's Top Large Businesses

Long Island Press (NY)

Here are the Top Large Businesses from Long Island's Top Workplaces 2023.

NEW YORK LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY

The New York Life Insurance Company finishes first on the Long Island Top Workplaces Survey for a fourth consecutive year. Founded in 1845, the New York Life Insurance Company has protected families and their futures on Long Island for nearly two centuries. Now it is the largest mutual life insurance company in the United States and is reported to have a revenue of well over $50 billion. At the cornerstone of the company's success are the 650 agents, many of whom have Long Island roots that go back generations. These agents work to develop lasting relationships with clients and help them achieve financial security for themselves and future generations. The company shows no sign of slowing down with CEO Craig DeSanto, who took over in 2020. Since DeSanto took the helm, the company has been named one of Forbes Best Employers For Diversity.

FAMILY SERVICE LEAGUE

At number two on the survey, making its sixth consecutive appearance on the list, is the Family Service League (FSL). Since 1926, this social service agency has acted as a safety net for families on Long Island. It's still the only human services organization to receive Council on Accreditation of Families and Children status in Suffolk County. The organization aims to give vulnerable individuals the tools and resources they need to reach their full potential in all aspects of life. Whether it's tutoring, medical assistance, or mental health support, the organization is here to help. Operating out of Huntington with 22 additional locations and more than 700 employees and volunteers, the organization aids more than 50,000 individuals across the Island daily. By helping these individuals, FSL workers hope to inspire everyone to do the right thing and help rebuild communities in the process.

PARKER JEWISH INSTITUTE FOR HEALTH CARE AND REHABILITATION

At number three on the list is the Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care and Rehabilitation. The nonprofit organization was officially founded back in 1972 to provide quality healthcare and rehabilitation services for adults, but the company's roots go much further. The formation of the institute and what it is today dates back to 1907 when a small group of benefactors started a homeless shelter in East Harlem. At that point, the shelter consisted of a single room. The operation began to expand with the increasing number of immigrants coming to the United States. With the help of private donations, the organization eventually moved the shelter to an eight-story building at 1260 Fifth Ave. in Manhattan, where the organization was temporarily known as the Home and Hospital of the Daughters of Israel. Its continuous success and growth led the organization to where it is today in New Hyde Park. The institute is now one of the leading healthcare providers on Long Island, with more than 1000 employees nationwide.

NEW YORK CANCER & BLOOD SPECIALISTS

At number four is New York Cancer & Blood Specialists (NYCBS). Founded in 1985, NYCBS consists of a team of some of the most elite healthcare specialists in the world, including physicians, surgeons, nurses, nutritionists, and social workers. Together they utilize state-of-the-art technology to treat patients suffering from cancer and blood disorders. NYCBS also understands that battling cancer is sometimes just as hard on the patient's loved ones. That's why they have developed convenient support networks throughout New York City and Long Island. For NYCBS, keeping families together is one of the biggest weapons for battling cancer. In addition, NYCBS recently partnered with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in April to open a new cancer care center in Flatbush. With the new partnership and more advanced clinical research, NYCBS is one step closer to its mission of creating a cancer-free world.

FAMILY RESIDENCES AND ESSENTIAL ENTERPRISES

Next on the list is Family Residences and Essential Enterprises (FREE). FREE is responsible for caring for more than 4,000 individuals who have intellectual and developmental problems. With the proper support and resources, FREE helps these individuals achieve their full intellectual capabilities. The ultimate goal is to find each individual a suitable job for their unique skill set. FREE offers various services and resources essential to aiding patients, including temporary housing, home nursing, family support therapy, and access to a performing arts program suited for each individual's talents. The team at FREE ensures an efficient, reliable, and cheerful experience for patients and their families. With 1600 Long Island employees, there are numerous roles at FREE, but they all have one aspect in common. By teaching individuals with developmental problems how to cope, employees learn more about themselves, ultimately leading them to become better people.
