Tips for life, health insurance for military members, families

Mike Causey Insurance CommissionerThe Goldsboro News-Argus

Finding the right health or life insurance plans can feel like you're navigating a minefield, whether you're active duty, a reservist or a military family member. If you're in the market for one of these policies, here are a few things to consider:

Health insuranceIf you are on active duty for more than 30 days, you and your dependents should be covered by military health care. But it's important to check out the fine print:

Dependents can access medical and dental care at military facilities. Availability may vary.

TRICARE offers civilian health benefits funded by the federal government. Enrollment is not automatic. Make sure you sign up. Your military unit can help with the details.

If you're leaving a civilian job for military service, the COBRA (the Consolidated omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) and USERRA (the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994) protect your right to continue employer-based health coverage for up to 24 months.

If your service is for 30 days or less, you'll pay the same rate as you previously paid. If it's longer, you may need to cover the full premium plus a 2% administration fee.

If you've lost coverage through your employer, thanks to HIPPA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), you might qualify to enroll in your spouse's group health plan. Don't wait. Time limits apply.

Life insuranceBefore buying life insurance, especially on base, make sure the agent is legitimate:

They need permission from the Department of Defense to sell on military installations.

They must be licensed by the Department of Insurance. Ask to see the agent's permits and license to be sure the agent is legitimate.

Many private carriers do not offer coverage for acts of war. But SGLI — the Service Members' Group Life Insurance program — has your back. It's affordable and includes coverage for death due to acts of war.

If you have coverage elsewhere, double-check with your agent to avoid overlapping policies. You might be paying for insurance coverage you already have.

Need help?Your flight, payroll or finance office can help provide details on premium payment and refund issues. For claims, reach out to the office of Service Members' Group Life Insurance (OSGLI).

In addition, my team at the Department of Insurance is here to help all North Carolina consumers. Call us weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 855-408-1212, or visit www.ncdoi.gov.

I'm grateful for the sacrifice of service members and their families. You service us. Please don't hesitate to give us a call if we can help you.
