Dec. 10--TICONDEROGA -- Firefighters dealt quickly with a small blaze at 35 Schuyler St. on Saturday.
Ticonderoga Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched around 1:05 a.m. to the residence after a grease fire erupted on the stove.
The flames spread into the wall, kitchen cabinets and ceiling, but the fire was contained to the kitchen, Chief Matt Watts said.
The homeowner, Kristine Yani-Fisher, and her daughter and brother, who also live there, were able to stay in the home.
The blaze erupted after food was left unattended on the stove. Yani-Fisher has insurance on the property, the chief said.
"It was just smoldering when got there," Watts said.
One of the residents threw a pail of water on the fire, the chief said.
"That's not something we recommend because it can make a grease fire spread, but it worked out for them in this case," Watts added.
When firefighters arrived they finished it off with a water can and a dry-chemical extinguisher.
They were back in service by 2 a.m.
OVERHEATED OUTLET
After a separate incident the same day, the North Country Chapter of the American Red Cross assisted a woman and her infant daughter at 1062 Wicker St. after an electrical outlet in the house heated up to 140 to 150 degrees.
There was no fire in the residence, but the woman didn't feel safe staying there, Watts said.
Firefighters received the call around 7 p.m., Watts said.
