Things to do between Oct. 16 and 22 in the mid-Willamette Valley

Lebanon Express (OR)

SUNDAY

Philomath Farmers Market, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., parking lot, Philomath Community Library, 1050 Applegate St. The market promotes healthful eating, the local economy and community spirit by providing fresh local produce, baked and prepared items, and handcrafted goods. SNAP, DUFB and FDNP accepted.

MONDAY

"The Supreme Court: Past, Present and Future," 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m., online. Presented by Laura King and Louise McAllister. Last June, the Supreme Court rolled out controversial decisions against the backdrop of current American culture. In this time of divisive politics and diverging ideologies, some found this moment one of victory after decades of work to protect the unborn, while others found themselves betrayed by the highest court in the land and now question its validity in our democracy. How did this come to pass? Is the court politically driven now, or have there been other similar periods? The history of the court will be reviewed, and then the current court examined within this context. The talk will also discuss current decisions and what will likely be before the court in the next few years. How the future of the court might be restructured and the arguments for and against this will be examined. Constructive questions and comments from the audience will be considered. Information: 541-760-2193 or [email protected].

TUESDAY

"Illuminating: Medicare Benefits and Enrollment," noon, online. Join a certified SHIBA counselor to learn the basics of Medicare parts A, B, C and D. In addition to an overview of Medicare, you will learn about supplemental insurance, fraud and abuse, hospice coverage and limited income benefits. Senior Health Insurance Medicare Benefits Assistance is sponsored by the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of the Oregon Cascades West Council of Governments. Information: 541-757-9616 or [email protected].

Academy for Lifelong Learning, 1:30 p.m., online. Peter Bober, vice chair of the Corvallis Sister Cities Association, will present "The Corvallis Sister Cities Association: A Thirty-Year Partnership!," a historical overview and current update of Corvallis' longtime sister city relationship with Uzhhorod, Ukraine. Nonmembers are invited to attend two free classes; if you'd like to join this class, email [email protected].

"Sips 'n' Science," 6:30 p.m., online. Join David Lewis, member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, Oregon State University assistant professor and tribal historian, to learn about the history and culture of Kalapuyans in the Central Willamette Valley. Participants will look at their original culture, how they stewarded their lands, and the adjustments they had to make when settlers arrived. Participants will dive into the removal process, treaties, encampments and payments, and the likely understandings of the Kalapuyans, and work by Indian agents to remove them all to the Grand Ronde Indian Reservation. Finally, Lewis will address their context on the reservation for the first 20 years. Registration: https://www.luckiamutelwc.org/kalapuya-history.html.
