Teel Road house catches fire; under investigation

Feb. 07--Beckley Fire Department Lt. Ernie Parsons will meet with insurance investigators this morning to try to determine the cause of a Monday morning house fire on Teel Road, BFD Captain Greg Blevins reported Monday.

Blevins said his crew was notified of the fire at 317 Teel Road around 10:40 a.m.

"We got on scene, and we have a heavy fire in the basement and, then, one room right above the basement," Blevins said. "We just did our job, got it put out.

"We had a little bit of trouble getting to it," he added. "We had trouble getting back into the room. It was pretty hot in there."

Fire crews had extinguished the blazes in both rooms within the hour but remained at the scene until around 5 p.m., Blevins reported.

They encountered a small problem with a hydrant.

"It worked," Blevins explained. "We had good water and all.

"The only problem is, when we went to turn it off, we couldn't get it turned off so we had to call the water department."

He said hydrants that spray aren't uncommon, because a piece can get broken when firefighters access the water.

"It's always good to break one when you're turning it off, and not when you're turning it on," he noted.

Residents of the house weren't at home when the fire started, Blevins said, and there were no injuries.

"It's always a huge relief when you get there and you see that everybody is outside," he said. "As much as you hate for something to burn, you certainly don't want any people hurt."

JanCare Ambulance and Beckley Police Department crews also responded, according to Raleigh County Emergency Operations Center reports.
