Study: Even Minor Driving Infractions Cause Insurance Rates to Spike (And the Numbers Keep Going Up Each Year!)

Business Wire

–Report Unveils State-by-State, In-Depth Data on Auto Premiums–

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- It’s no secret that getting a traffic ticket will affect your auto insurance premium. But what may surprise many drivers is just how much rates rise depending on the type of infraction you get. Today insuranceQuotes released its fourth annual Moving Violations Study, which found that premiums rise as much as 96% on average nationwide, after a single moving violation.

The study analyzed premium increases for 17 different moving violations, including careless driving, reckless driving, driving under the influence, and speeding.

“The premium increase for your first ticket can be substantial and the cost varies significantly among different types of violations. Each year, premiums keep going up and they differ from state to state,” said Laura Adams, senior insurance analyst at insuranceQuotes. “Luckily, there are ways consumers can contain costs even after you get a rate increase.”

Below are the average national premium increases for the five most expensive violations:

  1. DUI — 95.6%
  2. Reckless driving — 87.5%
  3. Careless driving — 33.0%
  4. Speeding 31+ mph over the limit — 30.7%
  5. Speeding 16 to 30 mph over the limit — 29.2%

The full report—which includes further findings, state-by-state rankings and the past year’s data—is available at http://www.insurancequotes.com/auto/moving-violations-insurance-premiums-tickets-6012017.

Methodology:

insuranceQuotes and Quadrant Information Services calculated the impacts of 17 common moving violations in all 50 states (and Washington, D.C.) using data from the largest carriers (representing 60-70% of market share) in each state/district.

Averages are based on a 45-year-old married, employed female with a clean driving record driving a 2013 sedan. The hypothetical driver has a bachelor’s degree, an excellent credit score, no lapses in coverage and the following limits: $100,000/$300,000 (bodily injury), $100,000 (property damage), $100,000/$300,000 (UI/UIM), $10,000 (PIP) and a $500 deductible.
