St. Louis Metro to take over MBTA Twitter account in Stanley Cup wager

Jun. 13--The St. Louis Metro will soon take the helm of the MBTA's Twitter account as the Boston transit authority continues to deal with backlash after two recent train derailments.

As part of a friendly wager between the two cities that hosted the Stanley Cup Final that ended with the Blues winning over the Bruins in a seventh game, the St. Louis Metro will take over the MBTA's Twitter account.

The @STLMetro account first proposed the wager on May 24, and the @MBTA account happily obliged. Some very minor trash talking ensued.

The MBTA often uses its account to share daily updates and information about the trains and buses that make up Boston's transportation system.

More recently, the account became a target for a flood of angry messages after two train derailments within three days. A derailed Green Line train injured 11 people on Saturday near Kenmore Square, and a derailed Red Line train at JFK/UMass station in Dorchester caused major delays for commuters across the city on Tuesday.

A Red Line train derailment sparked outrage and pointed jokes from MBTA passengers on Twitter.

On Thursday, following the Blues' 4-1 playoff-clinching win over the Bruins in Boston, the MBTA wrote on Twitter, "Dear @STLMetro, Your friends at the T congratulate the City of St. Louis for bringing home their first ever Stanley Cup. We'll be coordinating with you soon to hold up our end of the wager."

It is unclear when the takeover will take place, but some social media users from Boston are asking the winners to think twice.

Users were quick to reply with snarky humor to the St. Louis Metro, inquiring if they have advice on preventing train derailments. A Twitter user by the name of Kate Timberlake wrote, "Yeah you don't really want to deal with the mess the MBTA is dealing with this week."
