Shaheen Statement Ahead Of Health Insurance Open Enrollment Period

WASHINGTON, Nov. 1 -- Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-New Hampshire, issued the following news release:

U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen issued the following statement ahead of the health insurance open enrollment period, which runs from November 1 through January 15, 2023. Granite Staters should enroll by December 15 for coverage that starts January 1, 2023, and are encouraged to visit HealthCare.gov to view and compare health plans for the upcoming year.

"It's important that New Hampshire families shop around and find the best plan that works for them. The 2023 health insurance open enrollment period begins on Tuesday and I encourage residents to visit HealthCare.gov to start exploring their options," said Senator Shaheen. "Experts are anticipating a rampant flu season, COVID-19 cases are on the rise and RSV cases are spiking early. Take this as a reminder, do not wait to enroll in insurance through the marketplace. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, families have access to affordable, quality health care plans. And thanks to my legislation included in the American Rescue Plan and extended in the Inflation Reduction Act, expanded and enhanced ACA premium tax credits are available to more enrollees than ever. I'll keep working to improve the law to work for all families and expand health care access to every American."

Shaheen has led efforts in Congress to protect and improve the ACA. During negotiations around the American Rescue Plan, Senator Shaheen led the push to expand and enhance the ACA's premium tax credits. Provisions of the Senator's bill, the Improving Health Insurance Affordability Act, were included in the American Rescue Plan that President Biden signed into law last year. Her efforts were the most significant update to the health insurance law in a decade. Shaheen has also consistently pushed for efforts to limit the sale and availability of short-term, limited-duration insurance (STLDI) plans, also known as "junk plans" because of their failure to provide adequate, comprehensive health insurance coverage. In 2020, Shaheen led the Senate Democrats' proposal to make health care affordable and accessible for Americans during the COVID-19 public health emergency. Shaheen also led all 47 Senate Democrats on a Senate resolution that would reverse the Trump administration's Department of Justice decision to side with U.S. District Court Judge Reed O'Connor's ruling that would strike down the health care law.
