SENATE PANEL ADVANCES 'MENOPAUSE COVERAGE ACT'

Acting to address a long-neglected healthcare issue faced by women, a Senate committee advanced legislation sponsored by Senator John Burzichelli and Senator Angela McKnight that would ensure that insurance covers care for menopause and perimenopause in New Jersey.

The bill, S-4148, known as the "New Jersey Menopause Coverage Act," gained the approval of the Senate Budget Committee today.

"Too many aspects of women's healthcare have been overlooked or shortchanged for far too long including treatment for menopause," said Senator Burzichelli (D-Gloucester/Salem/Cumberland). "This bill will help correct that neglect by requiring insurance coverage for the early detection and treatment of menopause and related conditions. This is a healthcare issue that can impact the lives of women in subtle or serious ways. It deserves recognition, treatment and coverage."

The measure would require health insurance providers to cover medically necessary treatments for menopause and perimenopause, the time period around the onset of menopause. The coverage would include hormonal and non-hormonal therapies, pelvic floor physical therapy, bone health care, preventive care and patient education.

"Medical costs can be a barrier to the early detection and treatment that can make a significant difference in the health and wellbeing of women experiencing menopause," said Senator McKnight (D-Hudson). "Insurance coverage can remove that obstacle so they get the care they need to manage the symptoms during a transformative time in their lives. This bill will set a new standard for comprehensive menopause care."

Treatment, screenings and preventive care can reduce long-term health care costs, Senator McKnight noted.

The legislation would also require that insurance carriers provide clear and accessible information about covered treatments.
