Sen. Tillis & Burr Announce $321 Million in Funding to Continue Disaster Relief Efforts

Targeted News Service (Press Releases)

WASHINGTON, Jan. 14 -- Sen. Thom Tillis, R-North Carolina, issued the following news release:

Senators Thom Tillis (R-NC) and Richard Burr (R-NC) announced the Army Corps of Engineers will award an additional $281 million to Surf City/North Topsail Beach and Carteret County, N.C. for storm damage reduction projects as the communities continue to recover from Hurricanes Matthew and Florence. The news follows Thursday's announcement that the Corps has allocated $39.6 million for a long-awaited Princeville, N.C. flood mitigation project, bringing the total investment in North Carolina to $321 million.

Federal Funding Awards For North Carolina:

* North Topsail Beach: $237 million

* Carteret County (Bogue Banks): $44.5 million

* Princeville: $39.6 million

Senators Tillis and Burr led efforts to secure the additional funding on behalf of North Carolina. The Senators pushed for funding by sending a letter with Congressman Rouzer on June 25, 2019, urging the Army Corps of Engineers to consider the Surf City/North Topsail Beach project that was awarded.

Senator Tillis also sent a letter to the Office of Management and Budget in July urging consideration of North Carolina when awarding disaster relief funds in the aftermath of Hurricanes Matthew and Florence, as well as sending a letter to the Army Corps of Engineers urging them to consider the Carteret County project that was awarded.

"This award to help North Topsail Beach and Carteret County with flood and storm damage projects has been a top priority of mine and I have worked tirelessly with Senator Burr to secure funding to help these communities recover and be better prepared for future storms," said Senator Tillis. "Both of these areas sustained lasting damage and I am proud to have led the efforts with Senator Burr and Congressman Rouzer to get the funding they deserve. I want to thank the Trump Administration for hearing our concerns and making these projects a priority, and I will continue to work until North Carolina's communities that have been damaged get the relief they need."

"Each storm that hits North Carolina takes a toll on our beaches and river basins," said Senator Burr. "After the historic damage inflicted by recent hurricanes, it was clear that more preventive measures needed to be taken to better protect our coastal communities. This additional $281.5 million allocation will do just that. I applaud the Corps of Engineers for investing more than $321 million in North Carolina so we can reduce the impact of future storms."
