WASHINGTON, Oct. 20 -- Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., ranking Democratic member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, issued the following statement on press reports that the Republican tax proposal may cap the amount of pretax money working families can contribute to their retirement plans:
"From thwarting state retirement programs to delaying protections that ensure financial advisers act in their clients' best interests, President Trump and Congressional Republicans have made it clear they will do nothing to stand up for working families and their retirement--and today's report on their intent to tax the retirement accounts of workers--all to give more tax breaks to the rich--is the latest harmful step in the wrong direction.
"I urge President Trump and Congressional Republicans to drop once and for all their attacks on workers, and instead work with Democrats on real tax reform that benefits working families and the middle class--not just those at the very top."
