WASHINGTON, Oct. 26 -- Rep. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., issued the following news release:
U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) and Congressman Markwayne Mullin (OK-2) released the following statements after President Trump declared the opioid crisis a public health emergency:
"I'm glad that President Trump has taken decisive action by declaring the opioid epidemic to be a public health emergency," said Inhofe. "While Congress has taken steps to address the crisis by passing several bills last year to address treatment and prevention of opioids, it is clear that more work remains. The declaration today will give states like Oklahoma more flexibility in how to curb prescription drug abuse with a comprehensive approach that balances treatment and law enforcement."
"Our country has seen the opioid crisis reach an all-time high," said Mullin. "Over the past few years in Oklahoma, our state and local governments have been successful at bringing down the rate of opioid overdoses. Still, it is abundantly clear that more has to be done to combat this deadly epidemic. Across our country, more than two million Americans struggle with opioid addiction and we lose nearly 100 of those lives each day to an opioid overdose. I applaud President Trump for making the opioid epidemic a priority and ensuring that the states have the tools and resources they need in order to continue to combat the opioid epidemic. I'm looking forward to being in Oklahoma tomorrow to meet with community and tribal leaders to continue discussing solutions to this harrowing crisis."
Tomorrow, Mullin will hold two events in Claremore, Oklahoma to raise awareness of the opioid crisis: a prescription drug take back event at 11:30am CT and an opioid roundtable with community and tribal leaders at 1:30pm CT. Both events are open to members of the press.
Congressman Mullin is a member of the Health Subcommittee on the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
