Sen. Hyde-Smith Announces $1.2 Million FEMA Grant for Sunflower County

WASHINGTON, Nov. 5 -- Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, R-Mississippi, issued the following news release:

U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) today announced the award of $1.2 million in federal disaster assistance to Sunflower County for roadway repairs associated with flood damage earlier this year.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) awarded the Public Assistance funding to the county, which was included in the major disaster declaration approved in April by President Trump.

"FEMA Public Assistance funding reimburses eligible applicants, like Sunflower County, for critical repairs following severe storms and flooding. These grants help ease the budgetary stress on communities and counties as they undertake disaster recovery work," said Hyde-Smith, who serves on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee with funding jurisdiction over FEMA.

Statewide eligibility for Public Assistance support was included in the April 23, 2019, disaster declaration. The designation was based on damages sustained this spring from severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes, and flooding.

FEMA Public Assistance grants provide supplemental disaster assistance to state, local, and tribal governments, and some nonprofit organizations. These grants support the repair, replacement, or restoration of disaster-damaged, publicly-owned facilities. In most cases, Public Assistance grants are limited to 75 percent of eligible costs.
