Schumer says Trump push to cut regulations endangers air travelers

March 25-- Mar. 25--The Trump administration's push to push to cut federal regulations puts American air travelers' lives at risk, Sen. Chuck Schumer said Sunday.

A 2017 Trump executive order requiring federal agencies to eliminate two regulations for every new one that they introduce is at odds with the government's investigation into Boeing's 737 Max jets, which have been involved in two deadly crashes over the past five months, said Schumer (D-N.Y.).

The Federal Aviation Administration grounded all of the 737 Max planes flown by U.S. airlines on March 13, three days after a jet operated by Ethiopian Airlines crashed shortly after taking off from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, killing all 157 people on board.

"Say, for a moment, it is found that the recent issues with Boeing spell out, very clearly, that a new regulation is needed in the skies?" said Schumer. "What two aviation regulations would potentially be eliminated? The bottom line is that you can't slowly clip the wings of the FAA and still expect safety to fly."

Schumer added that an advisory committee made up of leaders of the airline and airplane manufacturing industries has compiled a list of 300 regulations to cut. The group, dubbed the Aviation Rulemaking Advisory Committee, includes leaders executives from Boeing.

"If we are going to get to the bottom of what, if anything, has gone wrong with the agency approval process, product certification or the internal checks and balances we depend on to ensure safety in the skies, we have to also look at how the FAA's own newly-installed hurdles are being cleared," Schumer said.
