In response to Lisa Everett's letter, Group calls on feds to end MCSO monitoring:
This has gone on since 2014. When I moved to Arizona in 2013, I saw what was happening, knew it was a mess (everyone looking out for No. 1) and offered to help.
Back in the late 1970s, before the ink was dry on my law degree, I was working in the Will County State's Attorney Office in Illinois. The ACLU had sued the county schools and I was told to let our liability insurance government expert lawyers resolve the problem.
How did Maricopa County get into this mess? After 40 years, insurance defense lawyers should have known how to resolve a case with the ACLU at almost no cost to the taxpayer. Instead, we got a real snow job. Republicans and Democrats were using the lawsuit for their own purposes.
For over 10 years, Republicans complained but did nothing to help taxpayers, like offer their own study and solution to the federal government. For nearly seven years, I offered to help, and got the door shut in my face.
The Sun Cities have some of the finest retired police chiefs, Justice Department employees, military security experts in protecting America's borders and elected officials. I offered to put together a committee of volunteers, go to federal court and get the problem solved.
I suggest the Republicans put together a competent working committee and stop hustling us seniors.
