WASHINGTON, April 24 -- Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minnesota, issued the following statement:
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) issued the following statement on the coronavirus outbreak at the Senior Care Community Center in New Hope. At least twelve residents at the care facility have contracted and passed away from the novel coronavirus. Last year, Rep. Omar was able to visit the care facility.
"I'm heartbroken to learn the news that there have been numerous deaths at the New Hope Senior Care Center.
"This virus has robbed the lives of so many in our community. Last year, I had the opportunity to visit this remarkable care facility and hear from caregivers and residents."
"I visited after Donald Trump tried to eliminate the Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) program, which would have depleted the number of staff members at St. Therese. After speaking to many of the residents, they informed me that the caregivers provide much needed hope amidst difficult times. I know they must have fought to care for each resident infected by the coronavirus. I'm sending prayers and condolences to all those impacted by the sudden loss at New Hope."
